There’s no denying the majestic beauty of a wild horse roaming freely. The untamed horse is a true representation of America: strong and free. While it is rare to stumble upon a herd of wild horses, there are still areas across the country where you can see them running wild.
The Virginia Range, Nevada
Nearly half of America’s wild horse population lives in Nevada. Many of these horses can be found in the western part of the state as part of the Virginia Range herd. The best way to see these horses is to find a waterhole around the hiking trails east of Reno.
Theodore Roosevelt National Park, North Dakota
Take a trip to the Dakota Badlands in the summer to experience the spirit of the American West. See the mustang on full display within the national park by finding a high point such as Painted Canyon Overlook or Buck Hill.
Pryor Mountains, Montana and Wyoming
Near Bighorn Canyon, you can find the descendants of colonial Spanish horses. These horses are smaller and commonly feature a long dorsal stripe along the back and zebra-like coloration on the legs.
Outer Banks, North Carolina
On the eastern coast, you can find more descendants of Spanish horses. They can safely be seen at wildlife sanctuaries and occasionally in areas with higher concentrations of humans. If you wander upon one, be sure you stay at least 50 feet away.
Assateague Island, Virginia and Maryland
Assateague Island is home to two large wild pony herds. If you visit the island in July, you can watch the annual Chincoteague Pony Swim, when the herd swims to nearby Chincoteague Island.
